Is your skin too clean! 3 signs you may be over-cleaning your skin

This has to be one of the easiest mistakes to make in caring for your skin and one I see almost everyday. Most people would assume that this would only apply to people with a naturally dry skin type that is fragile and therefore easy to overclean but it actually applies to both oily and dry skin types. Here are 3 signs that you might be overcleaning your skin.

  1. Your skin feels squeaky clean after cleansing. No skin should ever feel squeaky clean. So go ahead and test out your cleanser. Wash your face, pat dry with a soft towel and gently stroke your cheek with your fingers. Your skin should feel soft like a rose petal no matter what type of skin you have. I call this my rose petal clean and it is for everyone.

  2. Your makeup does not last or becomes patchy and uneven looking during the day. This is often a sure sign that you have over cleaned, and your moisturizer is not effective in replacing what your cleanser has taken away. Your skin has a job to do and will use all means possible including consuming ingredients from your makeup in its quest to rebuild its all-important barrier function.

  3. You have redness and breakouts. Our skin has a few task but one of the most important of them is creating a micro-biome on the surface of our skin. If your skins barrier function is not ideal from over-cleaning it may lead to redness followed by breakouts.

All skin conditions improve when the micro-biome or barrier of your skin is intact. So be careful to respect your skin. I like to think of it as a beautiful silk blouse, not just to be be washed with any old detergent but one that is chosen to keep it beautiful for life.
